The Man Booker Prize shortlist was announced this week (the link takes you to a pictorial summary of the books chosen). One unusual element in the list is a sequel to a previous winner. Hilary Mantel won the prize in 2009 for Wolf Hall (which is in the RUG library) and is nominated this year for Bring up the Bodies (which will appear in the library soon I imagine). Both books deal with the life of Thomas Cromwell, a well-known civil-servant/hatchetman in the reign of Henry VIII, and they are both excellent and easy reads with strong narratives and characterization, a feature sometimes absent in Booker winning works.
